Car safety seats are a must for children traveling in vehicles. From infancy, a child has to be kept in a proper car safety seat that is made for the child's height and weight range. Your child will use several car safety seats until he/she is old enough to use normal seat belts. Until then, you need a booster safety seat or toddler booster seat. Before buying a booster safety seat, however, you need to know the basics of child seating.

We all know kids must ride in the back seat of the vehicle so the issue now is how to seat them safely and properly.
For infants, from birth to at least 1 year old and at least 20 pounds, you should use a Rear Facing Car Seat. For Toddlers, 1 to 4 years old and 40 pounds, you should use a Forward Facing Car Seat.

Beginning at around age 4, many children are too large for toddler seats but too small for adult safety belts. A booster car safey seat raises your child up so that the safety belt fits properly and can protect your child. The shoulder belt should cross the child’s chest and rest snugly on the shoulder, and the lap belt should rest low across the pelvis or hip area – never across the stomach area. Your child will be using this booster safety seat until he/she is old enough to use a seat belt. It's not recommended that you purchase an older second-hand toddler booster seat because they may be outdated and no longer considered safe.

Did You Know?

Arkansas, California, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Carolina, and Washington have all enacted laws that require children under age 6 (or those who weigh less than 60 pounds) to ride in appropriate car or booster safety seat. New Jersey enacted a law requiring proper restraints for kids under 8 who weigh less than 80 pounds. Safety experts hope that other states will soon follow suit.
